Diabetes is a general health condition that can cause potential blindness. Routine retinal screening can reduce that risk. To learn more about Diabetes we recommend visiting the Diabetes New Zealand Website.
A systematic retinal screening service was established in the Wellington, Hutt Valley and the Wairarapa districts in December 2001 for people known to have diabetes. Initially under WIPA (Wellington Independent Practitioners Association), this program is now under Tū Ora Compass Health
The screening is provided by accredited optometrists working in the community and is free to patients.
At Clear Vision Optometrists our optometrists are accredited with Tū Ora Compass Health to provide this free service.
Protocols include:
Assess the condition of the retina
Detect eye pathology
Grade and reports clinical findings
Refer to the hospital’s eye department if required; and
Report the results back to the referring Doctor
You may need your pupils dilated. This may affect your vision and it is recommended not to drive for 3-4 hours after the screening appointment.
To receive this service you need to be referred to Clear Vision Optometrists from your G.P., Diabetic Nurse or Diabetic Specialist. Once the referral is received an appointment will be arranged for you. You may be contacted by phone and/or an appointment letter will be sent.
Follow up appointments will vary depending on your retinal screening results. This will be discussed at your appointment with the optometrist.
